Overview
EStà hosted a closed, multi-stakeholder workshop titled “Food System and Climate: the Logistics of the Last Mile.” The event, held in Milan on 16 May 2025, gathered 15 participants from government institutions, academia, and social enterprises to address the challenges and solutions for sustainable urban food logistics.
Engaging Diverse Perspectives
Participants represented a range of perspectives, including local and regional authorities (Municipality of Milan, Province of Varese, Piedmont Region), civil society organizations, and researchers. This diverse composition enabled a comprehensive exchange on the logistical complexities and climate implications of urban food systems.
From Insight to Action
EStà opened the session with an overview of the GARDEN project and its current progress, supported by findings from previous research and real-world practices. Presentations served as a springboard for an interactive workshop session where attendees collaboratively explored:
-
Key challenges in last-mile food logistics
-
Climate-related concerns and their intersections with transport systems
-
Viable solutions and best practices from their own contexts
-
Preconditions for implementation and the role of public institutions
Contributions to Policy and Practice
The outcomes of this participatory session will inform EStà’s contributions to the GARDEN project’s policy recommendations. The discussions highlighted the need for coordinated institutional support, integrated planning, and innovation to tackle the climate impact of last-mile food logistics in urban settings.
This workshop underscored the importance of cross-sector collaboration in creating sustainable and resilient food systems.
